Understanding Your Dog's Coat Type
Double-Coated
These breeds have a dense undercoat and shed seasonally. We never shave double coats - we focus on de-shedding, blow-out and outline tidy to protect natural temperature regulation.
Recommended Grooming Schedule: every 8–12 weeks
Home Care Tip: Weekly brushing with an undercoat rake or slicker brush helps reduce shedding and prevent impacted undercoat.
Common Issue: Impacted undercoat leading to skin irritation and seasonal shedding explosions.
Examples: Pomeranian, Border Collie, Golden Retriever
Curly / Wool Coat
High maintenance coat that grows continuously and mats easily if not brushed regularly. Requires regular grooming and maintenance trims.
Recommended Grooming Schedule: every 4–6 weeks
Home Care Tip: Brush thoroughly 3–4 times per week to prevent matting, especially around ears, legs and armpits.
Common Issue: Severe matting if brushing is missed - can lead to full shave-down for welfare.
Examples: Poodle, Cockapoo, Bichon Frise
Silky Coat
Fine, flowing coat similar to hair. Needs regular brushing to prevent tangles and keep feathering neat and healthy.
Recommended Grooming Schedule: every 6–8 weeks
Home Care Tip: Brush 2–3 times per week to prevent tangles and keep the coat healthy between salon visits.
Common Issue: Tangles build quickly behind ears and legs - coat can felt underneath before it looks bad on top.
Examples: Cavalier King Charles, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese
Wire / Harsh Coat
Textured coat that is traditionally hand-stripped to maintain correct coat quality. Can also be clipped depending on owner preference.
Recommended Grooming Schedule: every 6–8 weeks
Home Care Tip: Brush 2–3 times per week to prevent tangles and keep the coat healthy between salon visits.
Common Issue: Tangles build quickly behind ears and legs - coat can felt underneath before it looks bad on top.
Examples: Border Terrier, Mini Schnauzer, Airedale Terrier
Smooth / Short Coat
Low maintenance coat with minimal trimming needed. Focus is on skin health, hygiene areas and coat shine.
Recommended Grooming Schedule: every 8–12 weeks
Home Care Tip: Wipe coat regularly and use rubber curry brush to stimulate skin and maintain shine.
Common Issue: Build-up of dead skin or oils causing doggy odour or blocked pores if left too long.
Examples: French Bulldog, Labrador, Staffy
Combination / Drop Coat
A mix of soft drop coat and light undercoat - prone to matting if not brushed. Often requires full style.
Recommended Grooming Schedule: every 6–8 weeks
Home Care Tip: Brush 2–3 times per week to prevent tangles and keep the coat healthy between salon visits.
Common Issue: Tangles build quickly behind ears and legs - coat can felt underneath before it looks bad on top.
Examples: Shih Tzu, Cavachon, Wheaten Terrier
